FleetConnect Complete Wi-Fi Installation on Irish Rail Commuter Fleet

Dublin, Ireland September 2012 –Ireland’s number one provider of public transport Wi-Fi services, FleetConnect has now installed Irish Rail’s Commuter Fleet. The 28000 and 29000 sets operate in the Greater Dublin Area (GDA) including Longford / Maynooth / M3 Parkway, Dundalk / Drogheda and Arklow / Gorey

Paul O’Kelly, Marketing Manager at Irish Rail said: “We are delighted to now be able to offer our Commuter customers fast, reliable free Wi-Fi access as they travel. The huge growth in smartphones, tablets and other Wi-Fi-ready devices means that connectivity on the move has become essential for business and leisure travellers alike.”

FleetConnect CEO, Patrick Cotter said: “It was a challenging timeline, but thanks to great teamwork between FleetConnect and Irish Rail we’re delighted to Launch this fleet. So far the feed back from passengers using Wi-Fi on the ICR Fleet has been very positive.” We will now move to the next stage of the project installing our solution on the DART fleet, says Cotter. This should take up to 3 months to complete.
The award-winning Icomera X6 mobile application router that underpins Irish Rail’s free Wi-Fi service uses multiple 3G+ mobile broadband networks to deliver a faster, higher availability connection than can ever be achieved using a single sim connection.

“The Irish Rail Wi-Fi service will give passengers a better connection than ever before. Our route testing shows that there are, however, some true coverage blackspots, along the Intercity route where no mobile operator currently provides coverage. We will be looking to work with the mobile operators and FleetConnect to address these.”  said O’Kelly.

The Icomera X6 also includes a powerful onboard server and hosting environment for content storage and connected applications.

“Passenger Wi-Fi is application number one but we are already looking at ways to exploit the same fleet-wide data communications network for other real-time systems, which will improve the journey experience for our customers even if they don’t use the free internet service.” said Irish Rail’s Head of Engineering Peter Smyth.
